The community of Avon, Minnesota includes the City of Avon which has a population of approximately 1600, plus additional folks in surrounding farms and nearby townships. We are located in Central Minnesota surrounded by many lakes. Agriculturally we grow beans, corn and alfalfa.
In 2009 our community went through a Visioning process overseen by the Minnesota Initiative Foundation in Little Falls. Through a community-wide meeting at our Elementary School, we collectively determined our goals for the future. By far the three most highly ranked goals were a full-service grocery store (ranked 1st), a community center (ranked 2nd) and a plan for the economic development of our downtown businesses (ranked 3rd).
We realize that a grocery store is nothing we can provide ourselves; it will require a corporation or individual with outside funding and specific expertise to provide this for us. However, a Community Center and a Plan for Downtown Development is something we must afford for ourselves.
Although Avon has grown over the past decade, it has mostly become a bedroom community for larger cities beyond a 20 mile radius connected to us by Interstate-94. Many of our citizens drive both through town to make money and through town to spend it. Others work at home and on farms and dairies. And some people move here to retire. Despite this, today we have fewer places in town to stop, shop and/or gather than we have ever had.
Our goal is to provide a downtown social hub to accommodate citizens for scouts, clubs, senior or teen activities, and the like. This center could also be used by others who need a place to gather for family events like anniversaries, weddings, birthdays, reunions, etc. We are hoping that by having this place for folks to congregate, downtown businesses will thrive and their numbers will grow, which also addresses our 3rd ranked Visioning goal above.
Avon has a senior group, the Over the Hills of Avon. This group is spearheading this project and volunteering numerous hours to generate enough funds for this project. We have applied for and received 501C3 non-profit status, so any donation is tax deductible. Our goal is also to fund a small endowment that will help with ongoing operating costs.
Bottom line, we are requesting donations, small and large, to help us fund our nonprofit project. We are also requesting fund-raising ideas.
Please mail donations to Avon Community Center, POBox 238, Avon, MN 56310
And send fund raising ideas to email@example.com
Once we have a functioning Community Center, this site will be dedicated to news about the events being held in it.
